Power Mobility Economic Study
In 2004, RRC, Inc., a renowned economics firm, conducted an economics study of Medicare data (using a 5% statistical sample). This study reviewed beneficiaries who had received power mobility and compared them to those who did not AND had identical health ailments.
It found a savings to the Medicare program totaling $10,770 (net) less per year than beneficiaries without power mobility equipment. These savings were attributed to less hospitalization and emergency room visits due to falls and fall-related injuries:
- Hip fractures from falls account for 300,000 hospitalizations each year.
- Direct care for these injuries has been estimated to result in up to $18 billion in medical costs each year ($81,000 avg. for hip fractures alone).
In the last four years alone, the Medicare power mobility benefit has saved the American taxpayer nearly $9 billion.
