Differences in Power Mobility
The power mobility benefit may be one of the least understood benefits that Medicare provides. The general observer often uses the term “scooter” and power wheelchairs synonymously. However, these products have unique technological differences for in home use; primarily turning radius, medical necessity and safety.
- Because scooters are operated by front wheel tillers (or handlebars) and have a larger turning radius, they are more commonly used outside the home.
- Power wheelchairs have unique seating systems, adjustable arm and foot rests, are controlled by a joystick, and have a tighter turning radius making them ideal for moving within the home to assist in ones activities of daily living.
-
Accessories for advanced medical conditions can be added to power chairs or scooters.
- Canopies and covers to help keep scooter out of the weather.
- Baskets, bags and other holders to let take oxygen tanks, walkers, canes and other personal stuff along with power chairs or scooters.
- Power wheelchairs are the safest option for many disabilities over scooters.
- Less than 5% of Medicare expenditures under the power mobility benefit go toward paying for scooters.
