The SCOOTER Store Presents Power Wheelchair to Elizabethtown Man to Aid His Recovery
The SCOOTER Store and the National Association of American Veterans offer Gift of Mobility to son of Vietnam Veteran
Elizabethtown, NC, December 27, 2006—Nathaniel Crumpler, a 25-year-old son of a Vietnam War veteran, received a power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store as part of the company's Gift of Mobility Program, which provides mobility assistance to those without the resources to purchase wheelchairs and scooters.
Mr. Crumpler spent three months in a coma and had to receive considerable speech therapy after severe injuries limited his mobility. The SCOOTER Store worked with the National Association of American Veterans, Inc. to provide mobility assistance to Mr. Crumpler. The wheelchair was delivered to Mr. Crumpler at an Elizabethtown nursing home, where he is staying after caring for him became too difficult for his mother.
"When the National Association of American Veterans contacted us, we rushed to help this young man, whose father served our country," said Doug Harrison, The SCOOTER Store's CEO and Founder. "We created the Gift of Mobility program to give back to those who need help the most. The SCOOTER Store family hopes that this power wheelchair will brighten the holiday season for Mr. Crumpler and his loved ones."
Constance Burns, President, CEO and Founder of the National Association of American Veterans, Inc., (NAAV) said she is grateful that The SCOOTER Store is able to help people like, Mr. Crumpler. "We are pleased that The SCOOTER Store is stepping forward to help this young man," said Ms. Burns. "We come across so many of our war veterans and their families, who need some special act of kindness to improve their quality of life. The SCOOTER Store frequently steps up and provides mobility assistance for people without the resources to obtain it."
Ms. Burns said their mission is to provide financial, career, health, and psychological assistance and advocacy to U.S. veterans of war and their families. "We are unique among Veterans' associations in that we focus on meeting the needs of severely wounded servicemen and women, particularly those who are single parents," she said. "We also assist the spouses and families of those services members."
President Bush has recognized NAAV and the organization is endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and other veterans' service organizations.
The SCOOTER Store, the nation's leading provider of power wheelchairs and scooters, created its Gift of Mobility program in December, 2002. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with organizations all over the world while donating more than $200,000 per year in power wheelchairs and scooters, and manual wheelchairs to community service organizations enabling them to provide freedom, independence and personal integrity to those with limited mobility. "It is very unfortunate when people, like Mr. Crumpler, require mobility assistance, but don't have resources or insurance coverage to obtain power wheelchairs or scooters," said Mr. Harrison, who founded the company with his wife, Susanna Harrison, in 1991. "We created the Gift of Mobility program to give back to those who need help the most."
In addition to the National Association of American Veterans, Inc, other charitable groups have participated in the Gift of Mobility program including the American Red Cross, Hospice, Volunteers of America and Dream Foundation, as well as a host of churches, museums and foundations.
