The SCOOTER Store Marks Quarter-Millionth Mobility Solution Customer, Honors Senator Harkin, Father of Americans with Disabilities Act
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas, April 25, 2006—The SCOOTER Store, the world's leading provider of power chairs and scooters, on Monday marked the delivery of its 250,000th mobility equipment recipient with a celebration that also honored Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, father of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
In a company-wide rally joined by community leaders at The SCOOTER Store's New Braunfels world headquarters, employees heard founder and chairman Doug Harrison announce that Nora Spires of Springfield, Arkansas, earlier this month became the 250,000th SCOOTER Store customer to receive delivery of a power mobility solution.
"We are pleased to recognize Ms. Spires as our 250,000th customer," Harrison said. "She typifies the growing population of Americans that The SCOOTER Store has been able to help maintain freedom and independence over the past 15 years." The company recently celebrated its 15th Anniversary.
The personal appearance of U.S. Senator Harkin was a highlight of the special event.
"I can think of nothing more appropriate for this occasion than to welcome and honor Senator Harkin for his vision and compassion in championing passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 16 years ago," Harrison said. "An entire generation of empowered citizens is deeply indebted to him."
"I am very proud of my work on behalf of the millions of Americans with disabilities," Harkin said. "And I am pleased to work with those in the private sector with imagination and drive to make the things that people with disabilities can use to enjoy their lives a little more."
SCOOTER Store President Mike Pfister said that Ms. Spires will be presented a certificate to memorialize her recognition.
Harrison and his wife Susanna founded The SCOOTER Store in 1991 after experiencing a close relative's struggles in coping with loss of mobility.
The company is 40% owned by employees and Harrison credits their spirit and dedication for the firm's success and growth.
