The SCOOTER Store Signs Up for BP MS 150 Bike Tour Platinum Sponsorship
Will Provide $30,000 in Power Wheelchairs and Scooters to Those Affected by Multiple Sclerosis
NEW BRAUNFELS, TEXAS, February 2, 2006—The SCOOTER Store, America's leading supplier of power chairs and scooters, is hopping back in the saddle again—literally. For the 3rd year, employees at The SCOOTER Store are pedaling in the BP MS 150 Bike Tour taking place April 22-23. The ride is sponsored by the Lone Star Chapter of the National MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society and is not only the largest MS 150 Bike Tour in North America but is also the biggest non-profit bike event in Texas.
In addition to employees participating in the 150 plus-mile bike ride and fund-raiser, The SCOOTER Store will contribute $30,000 in scooters and power chairs to the Lone Star Chapter. The Platinum-level Sponsorship donation will deliver power mobility to some of the 17,000 Texans affected by MS who are served by the Lone Star Chapter. The SCOOTER Store team of 53 cyclists will also bring in MS Society donations of $20,000 or more.
It has been a terrific experience for The SCOOTER Store team to ride in the BP MS 150 the past couple of years - we appreciate the opportunity to get our team together for such a great cause and support the local MS Chapter," said Mike Pfister, president of The SCOOTER Store. "This year will be especially rewarding as we have the opportunity to supply our mobility equipment for those in need—right here in the Lone Star Chapter area.
MS is a debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The disease is characterized by the body attacking the fatty tissue protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS. This disrupts the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain, producing the various symptoms of MS. MS does not have an exact known cause. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is dedicated to ending the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.
The partnership with the SCOOTER Store is a tremendous benefit to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Lone Star Chapter and the communities we serve," said Doug Suggitt, Vice President of Development at the Lone Star Chapter of the National MS Society. "Not only does the partnership raise funds for research and programs, it also helps on the local level with equipment for our clients.
The 13,000 BP MS 150 riders participating in the event begin in Houston and spend the night in La Grange, Texas. On the next day, participants cycle through the rolling Texas countryside and end the tour at the finish line in the capital city of Austin. In total, riders pedal close to 180 miles to help raise funds for MS.
