The SCOOTER Store Named One of FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For

Employee-Owned Leader in Mobility is Accorded National Honor

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas, December 29, 2003—The SCOOTER Store has been named by FORTUNE magazine to its 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 2004. A full listing of all award-winning companies will be published in FORTUNE's January 12 issue, which will be available on newsstands January 5. The SCOOTER Store, headquartered in New Braunfels, Texas, is the nation's leading supplier of power wheelchairs and scooters.

In naming The SCOOTER Store to its renowned honor roll of exemplary employers, FORTUNE cited the company's policy of having managers assemble workers in a 14-minute huddle to discuss the day's goals. In addition, FORTUNE recognized that employees own 40 percent of the company through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP).

Doug Harrison, founder and president of The SCOOTER Store, pointed to the honor as confirmation of the firm's long-standing reputation for placing the best interests of its customers and its employees alongside those of the company at all times.

"We are proud and honored that our unique culture based on 'always doing the right thing' has gained national recognition," he said. "FORTUNE has learned what our employees have known for years -- that The SCOOTER Store is a great place to work."

Harrison also took the occasion to praise the company's workforce.

"Our people are our greatest asset," he said. "It is their dedication in helping those with mobility challenges to maintain their freedom, independence and dignity that has built the success of The SCOOTER Store."

From a humble beginning 12 years ago as a small rental facility, The SCOOTER Store has grown to become the nation's leading provider of power wheelchairs and scooters. It operates more than 60 facilities coast-to-coast and lists approximately 1300 employee-owners.
