Other Power Mobility Benefits
In the mid 1990s, changes in technology allowed manufacturers to narrow the wheelbase of a power wheelchair and made it possible for people with mobility impairments to pass through most doorways in their own home unassisted. The results of these changes give senior citizens the ability to rely less on a caregiver and the freedom to carry out their own activities of daily living such as cooking, toileting, grooming, or simply moving from room to room.
RRC, Inc., in Bryan, Texas, conducted an economic study of Medicare data showing that by providing mobility equipment to senior citizens and people with disabilities who are medically qualified, Medicare avoids over $14,000 (today's dollars) in healthcare-related expenses due to less hospitalization as a result of falls and fall-related injuries.
